Malta/Stillwater GloFo & Brown’s Beach News

By Harold Wessell

STILLWATER AND MALTA, Aug. 1– The Malta Town Board at its late July agenda meeting included a special meeting in which it deemed complete the most recent update of environmental impact studies on GlobalFoundries' emerging Planned Development District.

On August 1, the Stillwater Town Board, Planning Board leadership and engineer likewise reviewed the four requested amendments to the project, and can schedule action on them after Malta, as lead agency in this PDD process, holds a public hearing and special meeting and rules on the requests, scheduled for August 19 starting at 6:30PM.  (Stillwater's regular business meeting will have been on Aug. 15, so that it would presumably set a special meeting.)

TOWN OF STILLWATER, July 9–

Two large "checks" were displayed at the front of the Stillwater Town Board chamber at a special meeting on this day.

One, explained Supervisor Edward Kinowski, was for $1 million, which had been received from GlobalFoundries.  "And thank God for GlobalFoundries as far as I'm concerned. They've done amazing things for our Town, by the money they've provided; and by the jobs and everything they've provided for Saratoga County, and our area."

The check to the right was the subject of the evening's meeting: for $242,482, the total amount of 27 grants awarded by the Stillwater-GlobalFoundries Foundation, inaugurated about two years ago. This was the first disbursement of grants by the Foundation.

Malta & Stillwater Rescues to Combine – By Harold Wessell

MALTA, May 29 – Malta Ambulance Corps representatives met with the Malta Town Board

at its agenda meeting for June 3, to outline a proposed plan, long under consideration by the Corps and the Stillwater Rescue Squad, that would essentially absorb the Stillwater service and formalize daytime assistance that Malta has been providing for a decade.

The move reflects steps - such as hiring paid staff for daytimes -- that emergency services including fire departments have had to resort to for some years because of lack of volunteers.

Preparedness For Flooding – Heavy Rain Due In The Next Several Days

It appears we are in line to receive up to 3” of rain over the next 5 days, with most of that coming during Thursday and Friday.  We will have to be alert to flooding in low lying areas and carefully watch the rise on streams and rivers.  Rainfall of this magnitude would be enough to cause some hydrologic issues as recent rains have allowed for wet soil conditions and many streams/rivers remain high.

Preparedness activities:

  • If you rely on a sump pump be sure that it is working, that it is connected to a ground fault protection.  Be prepared for a back up pump.
  • Make sure your sump pump discharges at least 10’ or more from the foundation or it will seep back in.
  • The fire department is unable to pump basements less than 3”, obtain a shop vacuum appropriate to remove water or install a sump & pump.
  • This rain event is not going to come from violent storms, it will be heavy tropical type rain so the risk from losing power will be from trees falling due to over saturated ground.
  • If you live in low lying areas expect water to collect and rise, structures cannot be pumped out until the water recedes and stops flowing in.
  • Sand bags need to be filled and in place before the rain comes, after is too late.
  • If your basement floods due to high water conditions and you do not have a sump pump, it is suggested that stored material either be removed or placed high off the floor.
  • If your basement floods regularly or has the potential to flood, a long term mitigation effort will be to move important utilities up out of the range of flooding waters and to remove appliances to another location.
