BALLSTON SPA, March 16 – There is a traditional expression for police officers that is still in official use: Peace Officer.
Keeping the peace – but even more so promoting it where individuals or groups may be having some personal issues or struggles – is at the heart of the new assignment given by Sheriff Michael Zurlo to Deputy Kenneth Cooper.
A month or so ago, Cooper was put in charge, full-time, of a new Sheriff's Department outreach to schools in Saratoga County. The Express recently had opportunity to see – as he might well ask a student: "So, how's it going?"

Mechanicville School Bomb Threats – by Harold Wessell

HALFMOON – Feb.26 and 27 – Investigation continues of  two incidents at the Mechanicville Junior-Senior High School facility, on two consecutive days.
As follows later in this article,  Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael McCarthy in a conversation with this writer offered a look into how school authorities deal with such incidents.
In one case, according to statements from school authorities and the Saratoga County Sheriff's Department,  on Wednesday afternoon the 26th an apparent written bomb threat was found in a   girls'  bathroom at the high school. After the 12:45 PM discovery and immediate notification of the  Sheriff's Office, the "shelter in place" procedure was put in force – with students remaining in their rooms.

Stillwater Central School/PTA and Regional Food Bank Team Up

STILLWATER-- Stillwater Central School District is teaming up with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York to start a new BackPack Program this fall. The program is designed to provide 30 qualifying Stillwater students with backpacks filled with nutritious food each week. The district is seeking financial and/or food donations through the Regional Food Bank and volunteers to help pack and transport the backpacks.

   The bags will be packed each week by volunteers and discreetly distributed to participating children every Friday afternoon. One hundred percent of the donations go toward buying food for Stillwater students.

To make a monetary donation, go directly to the Regional Food Bank's website at http://www.rfbneny.com to donate. Please be sure to indicate that you would like the funds to be directed to the "Stillwater BackPack Program."

If you're interested in volunteering your time to pack or transport the backpacks, please contact PTA Co-President Kiki Wagner at kikimwagner@gmail.com.  The BackPack program was started in 2007 and is now available at 30 schools in 10 counties throughout upstate NY. The program serves more than 600 students a week.
