William and Elfried Milner

MECHANICVILLE – A dual cremation interment service will be held on Wednesday, Oct 9th, at the Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville for William and Elfriede Milner. Mr. Milner died at age 60, in 1978 at Riverhead, NY, and Mrs. Milner died August 11, 2013 at age 86 in Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Milner was a career Air Force serviceman, serving during WW II and Korea Wars, retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1961. Mrs. Milner was a homemaker.

They are survived by their son and daughter-in law George and Susan Milner of Mechanicville, and a daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Marl Christler of Charlotte, N.C.

Friends are asked to meet at the Visitors Center at the Cemetery at 11:45 AM Wednesday.

Helen Eva (Speanburg) Oliver – 91

MECHANICVILLE - Helen Eva (Speanburg) Oliver passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at her granddaughter's residence with her loving family at her side. She was 91.

Born on August 21, 1922 in Valley Falls, daughter of the late Earl and Eva (Cross) Speanburg.

During World War II, Helen worked 7 days a week for Behr Manning in Watervliet while her husband, the late William C. Oliver served in the armed forces as a Bombardier overseas. After her employment during the war, she worked as a mail clerk at Geier and Blum in Troy.

Relatives and friends may call from 5-8pm on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main Street, Schaghticoke. Funeral service will be conducted at 10am on Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke.

Kayaking4Meso – By Sandy McBride

Paddling against a strong headwind for 16 miles from Schuylerville to Stillwater to Mechanicville, Mark Wells and 75 determined kayakers . . . men and women of all ages and one feisty dog . . . completed the third annual Kayaking4Meso run down the Hudson River.  Their efforts raised $9,000 for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation's quest to find treatment and a cure for this debilitating disease.  Mark is the director of Kayaking4Meso, and has organized this event each year.  His daughter Linda was diagnosed with meso at the age of 15. Rarely found in young people, mesothelioma is most often associated with prolonged exposure to asbestos.

Hilda May Beecroft – 88

MECHANICVILLE – Hilda May Beecroft, 88, died peacefully at her home, Tuesday Sept. 24th.  A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born May 28, 1925, daughter of the late Gordon and Louise Smith, Hilda was a 1943 graduate of Mechanicville High School.  She retired from the NYS Dept. of Tax and Finance in Sept. 1990.

She was a member of the Mechanicville United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 6 PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St.., Mechanicville. Calling hours at the Funeral Home on Friday from 3-6 PM.

Agnes McGure Collum – 85

MECHANICVILLE – Agnes McGuire Collum, 85, of J.S. Moore Homes, died Wednesday, Sept. 18th at AlbanyMemorial Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at Noon at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, 121 No. Main St., Mechanicville, with burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Danelle Haner of Mechanicville Named to the Women's Soccer Team at SUNY Delhi

DELHI, NY (09/20/2013)(readMedia)-- Danelle Haner of Mechanicville, NY is a participating member of the SUNY Delhi Women's Soccer Team. Haner is pursuing an associate's degree in Business Administration at Delhi.

SUNY Delhi's outstanding facilities have attracted the NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship, the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship, and the NJCAA Division III Cross Country Championship. The Clark Field house features the Floyd L. Maines Arena, the CADI Fitness Center, and a mini-dome. The college's athletic facilities also include the Kunsela Hall Aquatics Center, The College Golf Course, an eight-lane 400-meter outdoor track, playing fields, racquetball/handball courts, and indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

Record Number of Students Take Part in SUNY Oneonta's Freshman Service Day

ONEONTA, NY (09/13/2013)(readMedia)-- A record number of SUNY Oneonta freshmen spent their first full day in Oneonta volunteering in the community. New students moved into their residence halls on Sunday, Aug. 25, and 202 of them participated in the college's sixth annual Freshman Service Day the next day.

Students worked at 19 volunteer sites in and around Oneonta, doing everything from painting and yardwork to helping elementary school teachers prepare classrooms for the new school year. Some students spent the day in canoes, helping the Otsego County Conservation Association to remove invasive water chestnuts from a wetland. The annual event is organized by the college'sCenter for Social Responsibility and Community. In addition to the 202 freshman volunteers, 30 upperclassmen and two faculty members participated as team leaders.

Agnes A. Burdick – 91

MECHANICVILLE - Agnes A.Burdick of South Street passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at her residence with her loving family at her side. She was 91.

Born in Hillsdale on December 9,1921, daughter of the late Ambrose and Alta(Wagner)Wilcox. She is predeceased by her husband Walter J. Burdick,Sr. whom passed away in 1975.

Agnes was a mother and homemaker,she is survived by the love of her life for the last 37 years,Joseph Borter, her children Bob(Barbara)Burdick,Carol Miller(Richard),Cora(Don)Chaput,Dorothy(Ralph)Pence,Richard Burdick(Michelle),Frank Burdick(Tammy),Kim Evans,Agnes(Steve)Barmash and Janet(Eric)Bilik,daugher-in-law Theresa Burdick,special friend Emma Thurber and five generations of family.

She is predeceased by her children Bill Burdick,Marie Mitchell,Walter J. Burdick,Jr. and Elmer Burdick.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11am on Wednesday, September 18 at the Elmwood Hill Cemetery,51 Belle Ave.,(off Pinewoods Ave.),Troy.
