Mechanicville Vets Memorial to Get New Home – by Sandy McBride

On Veterans’ Day in 1963, city and county officials, national veterans’ leaders, members of the Lt. Fred H. Clark Post #91 of the American Legion, Elmer E. Ellsworth Post # 6328 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Peters Purcell Post # 21 of the Italian American War Veterans, along with many local residents, including many veterans of World War II and the Korean War, gathered on the narrow lawn at the north side of the High School on Main Street.  They were there to dedicate a newly-erected granite monument honoring the men and women of our community who have stepped up to protect and defend our nation over the past two centuries.

Sunday Nov. 8 at 2:00 pm “Home of the Brave”

On Sunday November 8th at 2:00pm, the Waterford Public Library welcomes the Lost Radio Rounders, for a program called "Home of the Brave : Songs of Soldiers and Sailors" This program features patriotic songs from the Revolutionary War to WWII, honoring our nation's defenders. Nepal Earthquake Reaches Home – by C. Barton

On April 25th a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal resulting in a disaster that had effects of far reaching devastation. According to reports, the earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, then triggered another avalanche in Lantang Valley. This is the most powerful disaster to strike in Nepal since the 1930’s and saw aftermath that stretched far beyond South Asia. The earthquake in total killed approximately 7,000 people and injured more than 14,000. These numbers climb as recovery efforts continue. Nepal has been thought for decades as being vulnerable to the natural disaster of an earthquake.

Edwin T. Ciepiela – 81

HALFMOON - Edwin T. Ciepiela of Johnson Road passed away at his residence on Monday, May 19, 2014. He was 81.

Relatives and friends may call from 4-7pm on Thursday, May 22 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 319 Park Avenue, Mechanicville. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10am on Friday at Corpus Christi Church, 2001 Route 9, Round Lake. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Paul's Cemetery.

James A. Gilchrist – 65

MALTA - James A. Gilchrist, more commonly known as “Jimmy”, passed away March 7, 2014 at Saratoga Hospital. He was 65.

Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373).

Graveside services with military honors will be 1pm Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road.  Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.
