Possessions of an 1840 Family Farm – by C. Kelley

Let’s look at the probate file of John Baucus, who died in 1832 at 59. He was a farmer who lived near the current town hall. He and his family attended the Lutheran Church, and he is buried in the cemetery at the junction of Melrose-Valley Falls Road and North Line Drive.   In the 1830 census for Schaghticoke, John, age 50-59, had a wife the same age plus one son from 10-14, two from 15-19, one from 20-29, and two daughters from 10-14.

Dennison Farm Tomatoes to be Used in Local Sauce – by C. Barton

SCHAGHTICOKE -  Denison Farms; a local 164-acre farm located in Schaghticoke has recently been added to the list of tomato suppliers for Casa Visco sauce products. Casa Visco, located in Schenectady, began in 1945 when the Viscusi family started Viscusi Wholesale Grocers as a small grocery business. Demand for the homemade sauces grew and eventually they began selling specialty sauces.  Now a third generation family business, they rely on distributors from across the country for the ingredients to put in their sauces. The business, for decades has purchased many of their produce from California. While this will still continue, Casa Visco has expanded their list of suppliers to include local produce grown from local farms, Denison farms being one of them.

Christmas on the Farm – by S. McBride

   Tom and I have celebrated more than fifty Christmases together.  Most were joyous, happy and festive, some were sad and heart-wrenching, some were trying in various ways.  But we love Christmas.  The reason, the traditions, the celebrations are always there, memories lingering in each ornament, each decoration, each saved Christmas message from years past, each photograph of our growing family together at Christmas.
