NYOH: New Clifton Park Center – by Sandy McBride

You’re in your mid-thirties. You have two children, a second-grader and a pre-schooler.  You and your husband have a home in the town you both grew up in, you have a career teaching in an elementary school.  Life is good.

For Tina Pugliese of Mechanicville, that good life scenario hit a massive speed bump on October 1, 2009 when she got the crushing news everyone dreads.  She had cancer.

“I thought, oh my God, my kids are babies!” Tina said.

All Saints on the Hudson Basketball Benefit – by S. McBride

“Start Your Engines for a Cure!”

This was the theme of the 7th annual All Saints on the Hudson Youth Council Benefit Basketball Game held last week at the Mechanicville High School gym.  With a fanciful design of a tugboat and a race car on white T-shirts and royal blue T-shirts, the theme honored Tim Pisculli of Mechanicville, a tugboat captain, and Karen Schultz of Stillwater, a NASCAR racing fan, who have both passed away recently after courageously battling cancer.

It’s become a tradition here in our communities for the All Saints on the Hudson Youth Council to embrace the cause of a person in each community each year who needs financial as well as moral support by putting on a benefit basketball extravaganza.

Rotary Recognizes “Service Above Self”

Mechanicville Rotary Recognizes Community Volunteers.

MECHANICVILLE MARCH 5- The Mechanicville Rotary Club recognized the officers and committee volunteers of the Mechanicville-Stillwater Breast Cancer Walk during their 3rd Outstanding Volunteer Service Award ceremony held at the Arts Center on the Hudson.  Matthew Hosek, Rotary Club President, said the award is presented to non- Rotarians to recognize their efforts to improve the quality of life in our community.

MSBCW officers, Catherine Lynch - President, Amy Pickett - Vice President, Joyce DiVirgilio Treasurer, and Sharon Clements – Secretary, organize several fund raising activities, including the walk in October, to raise awareness of the disease and the importance of regular checkups.  Over the past 5 years, they have raised more than $200,000 for cancer research and assisting families battling the disease.

Hosek praised the entire committee for their hard work and willingness to jump in and do whatever was necessary to make the Walk an annual success. The Rotary motto, “Service Above Self”, is clearly demonstrated by the actions of these extraordinary individuals and we all hope to see the day when their goal, “when the big C stands for cure, not cancer,” becomes a reality!
