Hoosic Valley Community Church Announces Changes to Food Pantry

SCHAGHTICOKE -  The Hoosic Valley Community Church is located at 2024 Route 40 in Schaghticoke. The longtime food pantry housed at the church will be changing dates and times of operation beginning in August. The pantry will be open on August 14th and 28th from 5pm-7pm. Going forward, the pantry will be opened on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month beginning on August 14th. The times of operation for the pantry will be from 5pm –7pm.

Schaghticoke Man in Custody for Alleged Homicide By Christine Barton

Schaghticoke-July 4th The police responded to a call at about 8pm at 1445 Route 40 in Schaghticoke. Reports indicate that Michael Matala, 62 was found dead at the scene and his wife Cynthia Matala, 58 is currently on life support in response to her injuries.

Anthony Repp, 22, son of Cynthia and stepson to Michael was considered a person of interest almost immediately. The search for Repp continued for several hours, as police presence in the area was heavy throughout the night and early morning. Area residents were advised to secure their homes.

Updated news reports on July 5th confirm that Repp was apprehended early this morning in Deerfield MA. It is suspected that he was able to hop on a freight train via area train tracks. Deerfield police notified area police that he was in custody. He will be transported back to New York.

As of recent reports at 8am, Cynthia still remains in critical condition. It is also suspected that Repp may have had some involvement in the reported attempted burglary call at about 2:30am this morning on Buttermilk Falls Road, which is fairly close to the area of the crime scene.

Hoosic Valley Central School- Tuesday June 11th 2013 the Hoosic Valley 5th grade class celebrated their D.A.R.E graduation. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program is a drug abuse prevention education program designed to equip elementary and junior high school children with knowledge about drug abuse, the consequences of abuse and skills for resisting peer pressure to experiment with drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

Johnsonville FD Receives Brookfield Grant – By Christine Barton

Johnsonville-On Thursday June 6th 2013 the Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Company was presented with a check for $21,000 from the Brookfield Renewable Energy Group. This generous contribution will enable the Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Company, established in 1916, to purchase new swift water rescue equipment. The Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Company serves the towns of Pittstown and Schaghticoke.

According to Brookfield General Manager of New York East Operations, Thomas Uncher, the donation was made through Brookfield’s Community Investment Initiative. Brookfield Renewable Energy Group owns and operates 75 hydropower facilities throughout New York State, two of those being on the Hoosic River. The group proactively promotes year round water safety initiatives

A Message for Prom-Goers – By Christine Barton

The mission of Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), according to the website, is to “provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions.” Hoosic Valley is among many schools in the nation that offers a Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) chapter. Ray Payne, the SADD Advisor at Hoosic Valley is encouraging his students as well as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders to get involved by sending a message of safety this year to those students attending the prom. “We hope it will have some impact on students to stay safe,” says Payne.

Hoosic Valley Clarifies Alleged Football Merger – By Christine Barton

“The intention was just to look into options with good intentions,” says Jeff Keller, Athletic Director at Hoosic Valley Central High School.  Talks of a possible merger between Hoosic Valley and Stillwater football programs took the community by surprise when an article in the Troy Record was published on April 10th, 2013. Reading this article was the first time that many in the district had heard of any type of football merger. One community member was “astonished at the article in the Troy record.”  These discussions should have involved the community, he said. “These were just discussions that were not had with any malintent,” said Keller. There were plans to discuss this at the Superintendents forum that was scheduled for early April, however this was cancelled.

A Celebration of Green for Kasey – by Christine Barton

On Wednesday March 27th at the end of the school day the 9th grade class stood together on the school field in memory of their classmate, Kasey Cumo who passed away last year on March 28th 2012 after a seven-month battle with peripheral T-Cell lymphoma. Her kind ways, bright smile and positive outlook are among the many qualities that made Kasey so special. Her classmates, friends, family and the school community joined together for a special memorial in Kasey's honor. While still feeling sadness over the loss of Kasey, the community remembers with a smile, the lasting impact she had on others in her short 13 years.
